It’s all about the handoff – BE INTENTIONAL!

As I enter this particular time in my life, I am acutely aware of the many changes going orelay racen around me.  Within our broken world, sin is working overtime to tear down most of the values we/(I) have taken for granted through the years.  My perspective now is our generation must work even harder in passing the baton to the next generation.

I think of my life somewhat like a long distance relay.  We as the adults, fathers, men, community leaders, church leaders, business leaders must focus on shepherding this next generation.  That means we must lead, love, mentor, educate, disciple, rebuke, encourage and walk with those that are coming behind us.  They are generally not going to approach us…we must reach out to them.  Engage them as a friend that will listen and not preach all the time.

If you consider the pressures within the marketplace today from competition, financial debt, weariness, uncommitted workforce, lack of customer loyalty, coupled with our own pride, selfishness and greed it’s no wonder that the REAL VALUES we’d like to see present such as integrity, honesty, humbleness, real servant hood, compassion for employees and customers are beginning to fade.  HOWEVER, our shepherding in the workplace should be to enable and encourage the right behavior.  Let’s commit to being better leaders in the workplace and pass the leadership baton to the next generation.  Get as excited about VALUES as you do about profit.

If you consider the values within a city or small town, what makes people really care?  Since moving to Chattanooga from Jacksonville, I can tell you the people here feel like this is their city.  They engage in their work, their civic pride is high, they volunteer with time and financial resources to make this a better place to live for EVERYONE…not just a few.  Having been born and raised in Jacksonville, I think in the 70′s and 80′s it was like that.  Somewhere during the 90′s we experienced a tsunami of people moving to the city that came to work but not necessarily thinking they were staying long term.  These people have a “renters’ mentality and don’t feel any obligation to engage or contribute time and talents.  Having OWNERSHIP in the place you live is powerful and should not be squandered…don’t let it get away.  Very difficult to get back.  Teach civic ownership to those you come in contact with…teach them to CARE.

If you consider the values within a church (community of believers) let’s just start with commitment.  The body of believer’s is a collective pool of talent and resources that God uses to advance the Kingdom.  Just like the human body there are many parts and they all have important functions.  (Not quite sure about the gall bladder and appendix though).  When Christians feel no real obligation to participate or to share their resources / money / time and talent, then they have the wrong perspective.  It’s not all about you!  It is about the body of Christ and advancing the Kingdom of God here on earth and using the gifts he has equipped you with to glorify Him.  This may require discipleship for younger Christians to gain understanding of why.  Don’t be legalistic in your approach to convince others as it will not last.  Bondage never holds up.  Love on the other hand endures forever.   God loved us first and He chose us to be part of his plan.  It’s an incredible thought that he would enable us through the power of the Holy Spirit to engage in eternities work.

When you think of values within a neighborhood, hopefully you think of real community.  Like the 50′s – 70′s where neighbors were real neighbors.  I have some very fond memories of neighbors where I grew up.  It was not uncommon to visit in their homes during the week for no special reason.  We were not on a treadmill, chasing our tails or running to the next event.  We didn’t have cable or cell phones.  We had neighbors to have community with and they needed us and we needed them.  Sadly to say…I have not been a very good neighbor over the past 30 years, but now it is squarely on my mind.  I intentionally need to know my neighborhood and build trust and relationships with people…even the ones that don’t think like me.

Beginning today, don’t miss an opportunity to be a COACH…someone, somewhere needs to be shepherded.  Focus on where God has placed you right now and be INTENTIONAL in the lives of those around you.   To intentionally pass the baton to the next generation is a HUGE task.  Some of us may be lucky enough to see the baton passed yet again to your grandchildren.  Stay engaged, finish strong…may God be glorified in all we say and do.

Life after 55 – A New Beginning (Part 1)

LBK Park Point KSK Park PointEarly last fall began a huge transition for our family that has resulted in some wonderful changes in our lives.  Kim and I began having the conversation about living more frugal by downsizing and tried to envision what that might look like.  We briefly considered a “55 and over” neighborhood in Jacksonville that that was very intriguing - smaller house, less to maintain,  smaller yard,, less to maintain, strong amenities, potentially more free time.  It made us stop and think what are we really doing with our time and what do we want to be doing with it in the future.

For me, it made me think about use of time, how much do I want to sell every week, how much do I want to give away and how much do I want to keep?  These are serious questions that I needed to step back and consider.

In September things began to change a bit at work and I started to realize that the vision and direction that I had hoped to implement at this company were not equally shared by the owners, although we had agreed conceptually before I started, the reality of change and giving up control was a difficult task.  After making several appeals for change and no significant response, it became apparent that my influence and time of contribution was over.  In a very short time, my career opportunity had diminished to that of a stale job.  Very disheartening.  I resigned my position the second week of November.  The owners were very gracious to me and offered to extend my pay through the end of the year as I shared with them how Kim and I were contemplating a significant change in our lifestyle.

At the very same time, our church of (17) years was also in transition with almost a complete turnover in staffing and the senior pastor scheduled to retire in December.  This was rapidly changing my once close relationship with our church to more of a casual connection.

For Kim the search for meaningful community was also high priority as she wrestled with what she is passionate about and where can she use her skills and talents, plug in and make a difference.   In October Kim decided to drive up to see Sarah-Grace at Covenant College for her fall break and take some time to be reflective about our future.  While she’s in Lookout Mountain, opportunities present themselves for her to meet people, get introduced to a “55 and over” community that is being developed, take a closer look at Chattanooga and comes back with a vision and startling news.

She announces, “I could live in Lookout Mountain, Georgia”.  For a Jacksonville native with extended family in the community to even talk about such an idea is quite a revelation.  Her enthusiasm for the idea did not seem to wane over the next few days or weeks.  So I began to take her idea with real consideration.  Why not?  If this revelation is truly from God, then we need to be obedient and trust that He will work out the details.

Over the next few months, we made two trips to Lookout Mountain to get more affirmation with the idea.  Each time the sense of calling to this area increased.  By mid-December we asked each other “How fast can we do this”?  It was bittersweet news to share with our immediate family that we really felt led to move…without them.  However, God also used our Christian mothers to encourage our decision.  They both felt the opportunity and timing was right.

So on the 4th of January we had an estate sale to thin our belongings and on the 11th listed our house.  I bought Sarah-Grace back to school on the 12th and took possession of a rental house on Lookout Mountain.  Before I could return home on the 15th we had a negotiated contract on our house with a preapproved buyer with no contingencies that could close in 45 days.  Wow, God delivered again. Now the scramble begins to find a new place for Haley and Philip to live, select a moving company, sell some more stuff, give some things away, box up our entire house and get some repairs made to the house in accordance with the contract.

Although I have nothing specific lined up in the way of employment, each of the visits to Chattanooga were encouraging to me to see an up and coming entrepreneurial community and making contacts with community leaders each time.  About the middle of January, I receive a call from a former associate dating back to the mid to late 90′s that was responsible for me getting the opportunity to work with Caterpillar. He indicates that he has another client lined up for consulting work and wants to know I would be available.  Then he tells me that the client is located in Adairsville, Georgia which is about an hour south of Lookout Mountain and we can start in February.  Another example of God providing the right thing at the right time.  I am speechless.

So we moved the last week in February, closed on our house the first week in March, landed back in Lookout Mountain on March 8th.  We know for a fact this is where we are supposed to be, our steps have clearly been ordained.  What is not so clear, is the mission(s).  We are very excited about the possibilities and our new beginning.

If God spoke to Darwin – Job 38

In a recent sermon we were examining the creation as described in Genesis chapter 1 and 2.  We then turned to a passage in Job chapter 38 where God is speaking to Job…starting in the second part of verse 3…

I will question you, and you make it known to me.  Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?  Tell me if you have understanding.  Who determined the measurements – surely you know!  Or who stretched the line upon it?  On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and presecribed limits for it and set bars and doors and said, “Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed?

Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place…have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?  Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?  Declare, if you know all this.

I am awestruck that God the creator of the universe would choose to have a personal relationship with me and extend his grace and mercy towards me.  One day every knee will bow before him…what a humbling day for those that suppress the truth.  Romans 1: 20 For his invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

What a difference a decade makes

Country Club Hotel, Lima Peru

I recently returned from a business trip to Lima, Peru.  I had not been there since the  late 1990′s and what an amazing transformation.  The city is still about 8 million people, traffic is crazy as ever although the vehicles are newer, less emissions, and for the most part they seem to honor the traffic lights now.

In the late 90′s I worked with the Caterpillar dealer in Peru about 2-3 times per year.  During that time, the city certianly had its overcrowding, no opportunity for people to get ahead and you could see it in their face and read it in their eyes…no hope.

Today there is an emerging middle class.  There are jobs being created, no one is sitting idle.  There have been 3-4 new universities opened, the government seems to be stable and the world is knocking on the door for the minerals and natural gas being extracted there.  With an emerging middle class with money to spend, the demand for shopping, restaurants, theaters, virtually anything you can think of will be available in the future.  Cell phones are the norm, Wi-Fi is readily available, and for those with the Starbucks obsession, they have about a dozen or so throughout the city.  It is amazing the changes over the last ten years.

A Recovering Pharisee

Years ago I had a friend here in Jacksonville, that felt the call to enter the ministry in his late 40′s.  He commuted back and forth  to Orlando 3-4 times per week to attend Reformed Theological Seminary.  When I would ask how he was doing, I would get this answer that he was a recovering Pharisee.  Not sure at the time that I fully grasped what he was saying.

Over the last couple of years I have come to realize his position with regards to God’s grace towards those he has called and God’s law.  God didn’t choose me once I got my act together, he loved me before I knew him.  For the majority of us we are quick to judge others by their lack of ability to keep the laws of God as if we do a much better job.  The fact is we break God’s law daily…sometimes hourly.  The fact is although we were created in the image of God and have the capacity to display the fruit of his spirit, we are dirty vessels, selfish, jealous, vengeful and my favorite stiff necked.

The next time someone sins against you, ask God to help you see that person from a perspective of grace and how you may be used to deliver it!

Father’s Day is now May 5th

Kim and I have been married 31 years this past December. Although our fathers were born and raised 1,500 miles apart, they had many things in common. They both had the same first initials; R.D. Kaye and R.D. Clark.  They were both raised on a farm, Roy on a dairy farm in New Brunswick, Canada and Kim’s father in Live Oak, Florida growing crops.

They both owned and rode motorcycles in their younger days.  Kim’s father had a career with Sunbeam Bakery deliverying bread in the early morning hours to grocery stores in the Jacksonville area.  Believe it or not, my dad worked for a competitor, Merrita Bakery doing the same exact thing during the late 1950′s and early 1960′s.  Both were married for over 50 years.  Both men labored extremely hard with their hands.  Both had strong mechanical aptitude and could fix most anything.  Roy mastered his skills building his own home in the early 50′s and maintaining some apartments he owned in Riverside.  R.D. Clark on the other hand also built his own home and honed his skills on room additions for family and being the maintenance man for a number of widows in the neighborhood.

While both men had modest high school educations, they provided ways for their children to attend college and virtually all of the grandchildren have a college degree with a few of them attaining a Master’s degree.  The similarity and impact of their lives on family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and community is truly remarkable.

R.D.Clark passed away on May 2, 2012 and Roy Kaye passed away on May 1, 2004.  Both men were laid to rest on May 5th eight years apart.  We will always remember!

The Third Commandment – there’s alot to consider

Recently while studying a Michael Horton book, “The Law of Perfect Freedom”, I was reflecting on the many times that I have read / heard that verse in Exodus 20:7 – You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

Throughout my Christian life I have understood the idea of not using the name of God, Jesus Christ in any form of conversation that did not exalt these names above all.  Certainly the culture we live in has done everything possible to demean, degrade and blaspheme the name of our LORD Jesus.  Even in the world of texting, it is common to see OMG which for some might be “Oh my gosh”…close enough.

Is there more to this commandment than just our language?  What about the name “Christian” that is imparted when you become a born again beleiver?  How do we do wearing that label?  That is also taking the LORD’s name.  In other words, the 3rd commandment is much more than our ability to control our language, its our entire being, our attitudes, actions and lifestyle – our ability to repent and extend forgiveness.  We are bought with a price and we bring disgrace to the name of God when we profess much and possess little.

NOT The Way It’s Supposed to Be

Certainly you must feel this way when you look around at the broken world we live in, I know I do.  Just read the newspaper, watch the latest newscast and just when you you think it can’t get any more strange, there is another heinous crime, corporate scandal, or corruption in government that we could never have imagined.  The dilemma is what do we do about it?  Can we try and hide from it?  Do we just accept that is how it is?

Is there a common thread to all of this?

I recently studied the book with the same title, “Not the Way It’s Suppopsed to Be”, by Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.  and it is well worth the read.  I wante dto share some exerpts as it has certainly helped me gain a new perspective on the world we live in.  We all know that God created the heavens and the earth and everything in it.  He created man in his own image and gave him dominion over all the earth.

The webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight is what the Hebrew prophets call “shalom”.  Something has gone terribly wrong.

Sin entered the world.

Sin is any act – any thought, desire, emotion, word or deed – or its particular absence, that displeases God and deserves blame.  Let us add that the disposition to commit sins also displeases God and deserves blame, and let us therefore use the word sin to refer to such instances of both act and disposition.  Sin is a culpable and personal affront to God.

Sin distorts our character, the human image of God.  We know that when we sin, we pervert, adulterate and destroy good things.  We create matrices and atmospheres of moral evil and bequeath them to our descendants.  By habitual practice, we let loose a great, rolling momentum of moral and spiritual evil across generations.

Along the generations, human nature itself, with its vast and mysterious amalgam of capcities to think, feel, supervise, love, create, respond and act virtuously – that is with its vast capacities for imaging God – has become the main carrier and exhibit of corruption.

Let that sink in for a while.  More to follow.

New Hobby – Repurposing materials…home accent pieces / industrial tables / art

About a year ago I wandered into a situation helping someone clear out a warehouse that had a kid’s play zone.   The business had failed and the bank was foreclosing on the assets, but needed them removed from the building.   In exchange for my labor and some rental equipment I provided, I managed to end up with a considerable amount of large steel posts, large 4 x 4 wooden posts,

wooden beams and finally about 100 square feet of rubber flooring that is almost 2″ thick.  Now that I have it what to do with it?

I first thought I would be able to sell the entire package to someone that had a warehouse and wanted to have an instant mezzanine.  Haven’t been able to sell as a bundle…so I began to look at alternative uses for the materials.  What I have found is this can be turned into very functional tables, benches, desks, etc.  So take a look at me new creations under the PICS tab on the site.  I’d love to hear your comments, suggestions and what you think a fair market price should be on the different styles.

Review Your Current Business Model

Most businesses today are facing external pressures like never before. The slow economy, rising fuel prices, competitive forces in the local market, global forces through the internet, it all is leading to one thing…lower gross margins on whatever it is you do.  For the business to sustain in the future, it is vitally important to periodically reset the gross profit target and focus less on total revenue. Gross revenue is never the proper indicator for profitability.

Businesses usually have at least 2-3 different products or services that they sell and these usually have different profit margins. The resulting blend of sales margin is what gives you your operating profit BEFORE you take out expenses. With margins getting tight, it may be time to re-engineer your desired mix of revenue. Some questions to ask:

  • What are the components of my revenue mix?
  • Which of these has the most profit potential?
  • Which of these sources of revenue is the most price sensitive?
  • Can I find another supplier for this product?
  • Can I figure out another way to deliver the product more profitably?
  • Can I bundle this price sensitive product with another product or service?
  • What can I do to improve turnover rate for the inventory?
  • Should I do anything to improve the marketing of my products / services?
  • How do I currently get customer feedback – those that don’t buy from me, why not?
  • Consider a different commission / bonus structure that rewards the employees when the business is successful not just when on individual is successful

A sustainable business model is critical to positioning your enterprise to produce a consistent revenue stream providing for your lifestyle and the families of your employees. Everyday outside forces are at work deteriorating your model…don’t forget to work on it your family is counting on you!
